Online Casino Campaigns to Make Poker an Olympic Sport

Leading online casino CircusCasino.com has started a campaign on Facebook that would see the sport of poker become a demonstration event for the 2012 Olympic Games in London before being fully recognised for 2016.

The Alderney-licensed site is operated by Genting Stanley Alderney Limited, part of the UK’s largest casino operator, and is lobbying the International Olympic Committee (IOC). However, it faces stiff competition from women's netball and Twenty20 cricket, both of which have launched online campaigns of their own.

CircusCasino.com stated that poker is thought to date back to 15th Century Germany and is now one of the fastest-growing games in the world after being officially recognised recently as a sport.

It revealed that the card game stands a better chance as it ticks more of the IOC's regulatory boxes. Unlike netball and cricket, for example, it is a cross-gender pastime that has a far wider international appeal and could become the first truly age and class-neutral Olympic event.
"Poker's appeal is global,” said Peter Nolan from CircusCasino.com.

“It transcends gender and age and is the fastest-growing sport in the world. It's ripe for Olympic recognition. Millions play every week, millions more watch it on television but perhaps more importantly, we've got some world-renowned British players.”

CircusCasino.com even released a list of eight professional poker players that it believes could take on and defeat the world as part of a British Olympic team. The selected players include Jon Kalmar from Chorley in Lancashire, Adrian Lambe from Abingdon in Oxford and Dave Colclough from Carmarthen in Wales. Business: GameLogic receives $3 million in financing

U.S. software developer GameLogic announced Wednesday that it received $3 million in debt financing from Velocity Financial Group.

Accoding to Velocity principal J.P. Marchette, the finance company has become exceedingly selective due to the “current economic environment.” But, he said, Velocity saw “a tremendous opportunity” in the case of GameLogic.

One of the principle reasons for Velocity’s confidence is the success of GameLogic’s “PlayAway” system. Under PlayAway, players can purchase “MoneyPlay” tickets from participating land-based casinos and redeem them for online play. Winnings are paid within the issuing casino upon the player’s next visit, thus avoiding online money transfers – which are forbidden in the U.S. under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act or 2006.

To date, 21 brick-and-mortar casinos in 15 states participate in the program. On average, participants report a two-fold increase in patron interest, while the company says, the system increases active club-card membership by 2.5 percent.

Legal defence based on poker as a game of skill

Two years ago, Mount Pleasant police in the Charleston area raided a home poker game, busting a number of players and making newspaper headlines. Whilst some of those charged accepted the penalties, 5 players have consistently fought the prosecution and will soon have their day in court, having secured a court order allowing them to argue the contentious skill vs. luck defence by asserting that poker, as a game of skill rather than luck, is not illegal gambling.

The Post and Courier newspaper in Charleston reports that if a town municipal judge agrees that the game of “Texas Hold ‘em” relies sufficiently on wits, rather than good fortune, it could make an important contribution to the legalisation of a card game played extensively in the United States and around the world. The other side of the coin for the 5 challengers could be punitive fines or further appeals.

“To my knowledge, the issue of whether skill or chance is the dominant factor in the game of poker has never been litigated with the presentation of evidence in the U.S.,” Greenville lawyer Jeff Phillips, an avid poker enthusiast and attorney for the five players, told the Post and Courier.

Phillips has a two-page document containing an order from Municipal Court Judge J. Lawrence Duffy Jr. allowing the prosecution and the defence to present evidence, including expert testimony, in the long-running litigation.

The case, as has been the case with similar cases that have been unsuccessful in the UK, will be followed with great interest by the industry, players and the media alike, given poker’s great popularity and high profile everywhere. Bother professional players and academic researchers, some at top colleges like Harvard, have claimed that skill plays a greater role than luck in the game, and there have been many treatises published on this intriguing aspect.

Phillips’ told the Post and Courier: “While there is no disputing that the element of chance is present in poker — as in everything else in life — there are numerous skills a poker player must rely upon in playing the game of poker that will determine whether that player is successful or not,” he said.

During a previous court hearing in August, Phillips asked the court to dismiss the charges because South Carolina’s 200-year-old anti-card, anti-dice laws are too antiquated and vague for anyone to make sense of today. For example, the law mentions antique games, such as roly-poley, rouge et noir and draughts. Phillips also contended that the house raided was not an illegal casino or gaming venue under the state’s gaming laws, as claimed by the prosecution.

A court date has yet to be decided, and the prosecution declined to comment on the matter.

Miami judge refers lotto share claim to the divorce courts

The Miami Herald reports that a bid by an ex-beauty queen to claim a half share of her husband’s Florida Lottery $600,000 syndicate win was turned away this week by Dade Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Bailey with the suggestion that a divorce court might be a better venue to resolve the dispute.

48-year-old former beauty queen Donna Campbell admitted that she had continued residing with her husband Arnim Ramdass (52) despite intending to divorce him after she learned that he had won a $600,000 pre-tax share in a lotto syndicate at work.

Ramdass had gone to extraordinary lengths to conceal the win from her, including disconnecting the telephone and keeping the television switched off, Campbell told the court, but she had Googled his name and discovered the June 2007 win, worth a total of $10.2 million to the syndicate.

In issued a dismissal order on Campbell’s suit, Judge Bailey said: ”She has no identifiable legal rights. Where does the law say you automatically have a right to participate in the proceeds?”

Campbell, a former skin-cream model and runner-up at the 1979 Miss Trinidad and Tobago beauty pageant, said she wanted to clear up the lottery case before filing for divorce from Ramdass, whom she married in 2005.

33 Jaipur Gamblers Arrested

Jaipur police arrested 40 men in connection with an illegal gambling ring Sunday. Thirty-three of the men were caught gambling and seven others we’re arrested for operating illegal gambling centers.

The centers, located on Lalkothi, Amber Road, Sanganer and Station Road, were reportedly operating under the guise of videogame parlors. Police seized 40 contraband machines from the parlous and recovered Rs 67, 901. The Rupee (Rs) is India’s national currency.

According to Inspector General P.K. Singh, police acted on a tip-off.

Singh went on to say that all 40 suspects will be charged under India’s Gambling Act.
