Poker goes Coast to Coast at Canadian Championship

The World Poker Tour is introducing a new big-buy-in tournament series to Canada.

The Coast to Coast Poker Championship is a product of the newly formed WPT Canada and will feature high-stakes poker action in Canada.

The theme is East vs. West in a showdown that will take place at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond, British Columbia, on May 5-13, presented by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation.

Canada has proven to be a poker hotbed; Brad Booth, Gavin Smith and Daniel Negreanu all hail from the nation.

Booth has already come on board for the momentous event.

“I was born and raised in B.C. so I’m proud to represent the West in this new Canadian tournament,” Booth said. “I challenge all my eastern counterparts to come out to B.C. so we can show the world who really is at the top of their game.”

The Coast to Coast Poker Championship will feature a total of seven events with an estimated 2,650 players and a $2.4 million prize pool. The main event will offer a first-place prize of $377,300 provided it sells out.

Smith, who is originally from Ontario, will also be playing in the Coast to Coast Poker Championship, although he’ll be representing the East.

“I’m thrilled to be part of the Coast to Coast Poker Championships,” said Smith. “I look forward to lots of good poker action and knocking out some of my Western opponents.”

Tournament events will include No-Limit Hold’em, Pot-Limit Hold’em and Omaha Hi-Lo as well as a couple of special events including a bounty tournament and a Mother’s Day team tournament.

The Coast to Coast Poker Championships will be the first stop for WPT Canada and the tournament will be filmed to produce four one-hour episodes, which will air nationally in Canada. The style of broadcast will reflect the WPT.

“We are proud to host the first-ever Coast to Coast Poker Championships, which brings some of the best poker players in Canada while adding an East versus West rivalry to the classic game,” said Darryl Schiewe, BCLC’s vice president of casino gaming. “We have such good poker in Canada and with great poker rooms, tournaments and players there is no reason to leave Canada to play.”

Event 1 – May 5, 2008

$500 ($460+$40) No-Limit Texas Hold’em 550-player maximum – Single-Day Event

Event 2 – May 6, 2008

$220 ($200+$20) C2C Super-Satellite Awards one (1) $4,000 C2C package for every 20 entries Each package consists of entry to Events 3 & 4

Event 3 – May 7-8 (Final Table May 11)

$1,000 ($920+$80) No-Limit Texas Hold’em with Bounties Receive $50 for every player you eliminate and $1,000 for special guest players 500-player maximum – 3-Day Event

May 9-11 (Final Table May 11) $3,000 ($2,800+$200) No-Limit Texas Hold’em Limited Field – 3-Day Event
